Jazz Ascona 2007 - Drop Kick

JazzAscona put up a couple of new stages this year, and we had the great pleasure of playing not only for the large group of jazz purists but also for the happy and beautiful Ticinese fun-lovers.

Music crosses all lines.

In the background here is Bryan Frankie Rizzuto, who not only made his first trip to Europe for JazzAscona, but wowed the crowd with his big drive on the upright.

A warm concert on a cold, snowy January night near Munich, in Furstenfeldbruck. A GREAT Steinway, a terrifically cultured audience in an 18th Century chateau --- wouldn't you feel good too?

This was a show at an enormous disco in Lausanne, the Club Eclipse. Twenty minutes into the 70-min. set, some kid tore a circuit off of the outside wall & the place went lights out. 2,500 kids, midnight, Saturday night --- could have been dangerous, but it was "acoustically electric !" I was SO happy to be on an acoustic grand piano. The lid came up, the bassist plunked harder & the drummer came down. I shouted songs at the audience. They sang back.

The crowd all seemed to come two inches closer to us, and by the end of those long 11 minutes, they were completely WITH US. It was there that I learned that techno clubs don’t really hypnotise kids ---- they just want to be where the other kids are, without interference. They LIKE Music, and they loved hearing it acoustically. It was a really special night for me.
